2012 NFL Predictions & Preview: Cincinnati Bengals 7-9

With the NFL regular season fast approaching, we at SportsUntapped are taking our crystal balls out of storage and examining each team’s full 16-game schedule to prognosticate how the 2012 season will play out. We’ll look at all 32 teams and reveal each one’s final record. Next up: Andy Dalton and the Cincinnati Bengals, who will try to repeat or even improve on last year’s surprising success.

CINCINNATI BENGALS

Last year’s record: 9-7

Vegas Over/Under on 2012 Regular Season Wins: 8

First four games:
Sep 10 @Baltimore 7:00 pm
Sep 16 Cleveland 1:00 pm
Sep 23 @Washington 1:00 pm
Sep 30 @Jacksonville 4:05 pm

The Bengals start with three of their first four games on the road, but they were acually better on the road last year than at home (5-3 vs. 4-4). Also, all seven of Cincy’slosses last year were against teams that ended up making the playoffs, including 0-4 against the Ravens and Steelers.  I wouldn’t be shocked if the Bengals pulled off an upset on the opening Sunday ngiht in Baltimore, but they probably lose twice in September for a 2-2 start.

Second four games:

Oct 7 Miami 1:00 pm
Oct 14 @Cleveland 1:00 pm
Oct 21 Pittsburgh 8:20 pm
Week 8 BYE
Nov 4 Denver 1:00 pm

The bye might help against Denver, but Cincy did lose a close game in Denver to the Kyle Orton Broncos last season.  The Bengals won’t be surprising anyone this season, so I’d bet on two more losses here and a 4-4 mark midway throuhg the campaign.
First four games of the second half:

Nov 11 N.Y. Giants 1:00 pm
Nov 18 @Kansas City 1:00 pm
Nov 25 Oakland 1:00 pm
Dec 2 @San Diego 4:25 pm

Another big part of Cincy’s success was a five-game winning streak to end the first half.  I don’t see enough weak spots in the schedule for them to get on an extended run this year.  They probably lose another two games in this stretch, if not more.  I see them at 6-6 through 12 games.

Last four games:

Dec 9 Dallas 1:00 pm
Dec 13 @Philadelphia 8:20 pm
Dec 23 @Pittsburgh 1:00 pm
Dec 30 Baltimore 1:00 pm

This is probably the toughest stretch in the Bengals schedule.  Three losses here and they’ll finish 7-9.
