2011 NFL Predictions & Preview: Denver Broncos 7-9

With the NFL regular season fast approaching, we at SportsUntapped are taking our crystal balls out of storage and examining each team’s full 16-game schedule to prognosticate how the 2011 season will play out. We’ll look at all 32 teams and reveal each one’s final record. Next up: the Denver Broncos, who will look to rebound from the franchise’s worst season in almost three decades.
Denver Broncos

Last year’s record: 4-12.

Vegas Over/Under on 2011 Regular Season Wins: 5.5.

First four games:
Sept. 12 Oakland, 10:15 p.m.
Sept. 18 Cincinnati, 4:15 p.m.
Sept. 25 at Tennessee, 1 p.m.
Oct. 2 at Green Bay, 4:15 p.m.

The early season schedule sets up pretty nicely for the Broncos the first three weeks. They should win two of their first three before getting crushed in Green Bay.

Second four games:
Oct. 9 San Diego, 4:15 p.m.
Oct. 16 BYE
Oct. 23 at Miami, 1 p.m.
Oct. 30 Detroit, 4:05 p.m.
Nov. 6 at Oakland, 4:05 p.m.

Denver’s best hope is that the Chargers will be off to their usual atrocious start, and beating the Dolphins after the bye also seems doable. Looks like two wins and a .500 record halfway through the season.

First four games of the second half:
Nov. 13 at Kansas City, 1 p.m.
Nov. 17 N.Y. Jets, 8:20 p.m.
Nov. 27 at San Diego, 4:15 p.m.
Dec. 4 at Minnesota, 4:05 p.m.

The Broncos should start falling back in the second half, probably with three straight losses. We’ll give them one win to put them 5-7 with four to play.

Last four games:
Dec. 11 Chicago, 4:05 p.m.
Dec. 18 New England, 4:15 p.m.
Dec. 24 at Buffalo, 1 p.m.
Jan. 1 Kansas City, 4:15 p.m.

Will Orton still be starting when the Broncos host Jay Cutler and the Bears? Either way it should be interesting. Give Denver two wins down the stretch, with the only definite loss the Patriots game, and that gets that a decent three-win improvement to 7-9 this season.
