10 new records set in Oregon vs FSU Rose Bowl game

Second-ranked Oregon thumped the third-ranked Florida State Seminoles 59-20 in the recent college football Rose Bowl game which set 10 new records along the way and also tied four others. Let’s check out which specific Rose Bowl records were broken and equaled.

1 – Total Offense

Oregon gained a total of 639 yards with 338 coming via passing and the other 301 by rushing. The old record was set in 2008 by USC when they rushed for 344 yards and passed for 289 for a total of 633.

2 – Most Touchdowns

Oregon scored eight touchdowns which tied the original mark set by Michigan in 1902.

3 – Most Points

The 59 points scored in the game by Oregon set a new record. The old mark was 49, which was achieved on three previous occasions; two of them being 49-0 wins.

4 – Most Points in a Quarter

Oregon scored 27 points in a quarter tied the record set by Illinois in 1952 and equaled in 2002 by Miami.

5 – Most Points in Third Quarter

Oregon’s 27 points were scored in the third quarter which broke the old record of 21 which was set by USC in 1973.

6/7 – Most Points scored in a half and Second Half

Oregon scored 41 points in the second half which broke the 1973 mark of 35 set by USC.

8 – Most First Downs Passing

Florida managed 17 first downs by passing which tied the 2007 record set by USC.

9 – Most Kickoff Returns

Florida had nine kickoff returns to break the previous mark of eight which was accomplished on three occasions.

10 – Most Plays in a Scoring Drive

Oregon broke the old record of 18 and set the new mark at 19. The previous mark was held by Ohio State and set back in 2010.

11 – Most Plays by Both Teams

Oregon and FSU combined for 168 plays with Oregon having 81 and Florida having the other 87. The old record of 162 set by Penn State vs Oregon in 1995.

12 – Most Yards by Both Teams

The two sides combined for a total of 1,167 yards with Oregon earning 639 of them and Florida the other 528. The previous record was 1,130 set in 2006 by USC and Texas. USC had 574 yards and Texas had 556.

13 – Biggest Winning Margin (non-shutout) 

The 39-point win by Oregon broke the old mark of 36 which was achieved on two occasions. There have been a pair of 49-0 shutout wins in the history of the Rose Bowl.

14 – Longest Fumble Return

Oregon’s Tony Washington returned a fumble 58 yards for a touchdown in the game against Florida.
